The architect tilted his wide-brimmed hat while a puff of sweet smoke rose from the pipe hanging from his mouth. Our walk along the walls was coming to an end. Beside us, men and women in sporting attire were taking a stroll as the sun slowly fell behind the green hills. Our eyes rested on the bell towers of the hundred churches of Lucca, decorated with merlons and bas-reliefs that glistened in the last rays of the sun. “A pure, exquisite work of art,” remarked the architect, before drawing on his pipe again. It was in that precise moment, like a revelation kept secret for too long, that the scent of the tobacco, the reddish light cast onto the bell towers, and the green tint of the hills all united, inseparable as lovers, to create that fragrance I called Tabacco Dolce.
